Protecting the rights of detainees – in cooperation with League for Defence of Human Rights in Moldova

Our cooperation with the League for Defence of Human Rights in Moldova, LADOM, targets people held in detention. The prison conditions in Moldova are far from satisfactory and often amount to inhuman and degrading treatment. Detainees’ rights are violated on a regular basis.

Lobbying for a Law against discrimination – in cooperation with Coalition of Non-Discrimination

In 2005 we initiated talks with our partners about the possibility to work jointly for an anti-discrimination legislation in Moldova. The Coalition of Non-Discrimination was created, consisting of Moldovan NGO’s that represent different vulnerable groups in Moldovan society; such as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons, Roma, young people, as well as general human rights organisations.

Monitoring the courts – in cooperation with Law Centre of Advocates

In cooperation with Law Centre of Advocates we monitor court decisions and their compliance with the European Convention on Human Rights, focusing on appeal courts and the Supreme Court in Moldovan capital Chisinau. The judiciary in Moldova faces problems with lack of independency and impartiality, and is in need of further reforms in order to secure these matters and the issue of corruption.

Strengthening the rights of the Roma population – in cooperation with Roma National Centre

In order to increase access to justice of the Roma population, and to raise the awareness in society about problems faced by Roma, we cooperate with the organisation Roma National Centre in offering free legal assistance, training journalists in ethical reporting on minorities, and monitoring cases of human rights violations against Roma.

Supporting independence of the media – in cooperation with Independent Journalism Centre

Together with Independent Journalism Centre we struggle to restore and improve the rights of journalists in Moldova by offering qualified legal assistance and representation in court. Furthermore, our cooperation aims at raising the awareness of the international community on the deficiencies in regard to freedom of expression and media law issues.

Promoting ethical and professional journalism – in cooperation with Association of Independent Press

One of the major problems in Moldovan media is the lack of self-regulation and of ethical codes. The ethics code from 1999 is vague and not being used.

Corruption proof reading of laws – in cooperation with Centre for Analysis and Prevention of Corruption

Moldova suffers from a so-called legislative laziness. This means that those who draft laws make the provisions as general and as vague as possible in order to be able to make convenient interpretations of the law, while legislators pass the laws without knowing about the risks of abusive interpretation.

Translating judgements from the European Court – in cooperation with Lawyers for Human Rights

Together with Lawyers for Human Rights we are translating judgments from the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) concerning Moldova into Romanian and making them available for download. This is not done by any other NGO or public institution in Moldova.

Changing negative attitude towards the LGBT community – in cooperation with GenderDoc

The awareness-raising activities that we do together with GenderDoc have the goal to promote the change of discriminatory state practices and negative social attitude towards the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT). We work on promoting access to information on LGBT-issues and improve the visibility of the LGBT community.

Fighting for freedom of movement in Transnistria – in cooperation with Promo-Lex

Despite the fact that Moldova has ratified many international treaties, rights are not always guaranteed by the authorities of Moldova. In the self-proclaimed Republic of Transnistria, located on the left bank of the river Nistru, they are often completely neglected.
