Making education accessible to children with disabilities – in cooperation with Veliki Mali

Civil Rights Defenders cooperation with Veliki Mali aims at making education more accessible to children with disabilities, by enhancing parents’ participation in the decision-making processes concerning their children and the quality of education that they receive.

Education on ethics in journalism – in cooperation with Independent Journalist Association of Serbia

The rights of media professionals in Serbia are violated on a daily basis. At the beginning of 2009, the global economic crisis dramatically hit Serbia leaving media without advertising revenue and forcing them to start letting off employees. Independent Journalist Association of Serbia estimates that in 2009 the previously established number of about 6,000 journalists will decrease as a result of these factors.

Increasing the visibility of LGBT issues – in cooperation with Belgrade Pride

After the adoption of the Law against discrimination and other developments, the LGBT community in Serbia decided to organise a Pride March in Belgrade in September 2009 to increase the visibility of the group and raise the awareness of problems facing LGBT people in Serbia.

Improving local media’s presence on the web – in cooperation with Media on the Web

Together with Media Dots, predecessor of Media on the Web, we have established a model for viable web publishing of media organisations and a few NGOs in the region of Western Balkans, to increase the level of competence of local media and help them to improve their web presence.

Stimulating the debate on transitional issues – in cooperation with Pescanik

We continue our cooperation with the radio show Pescanik (hourglass) in order to help stimulate the public debate on vital issues in the Serbian society. The show attracts 400.000 listeners every week and covers issues such as; transitional justice, corruption, and many more topics related to civil and political rights.

Establishing a regulatory framework for electronic media – in cooperation with ANEM Legal Department

Through our cooperation with ANEM Legal Department we seek to contribute to the establishment of a regulatory framework for electronic media and to proper implementation of media laws. We wish to contribute to improving the position of ANEM members in the Serbian media landscape.

Providing legal assistance – in cooperation with CHRIS Network

Together with CHRIS we provide free legal assistance to citizens, as well as free legal aid before the courts to victims of serious human rights violations. Every year we agree on a number of strategic cases for litigation before the courts.

Fighting impunity – in cooperation with Humanitarian Law Centre

Together with Humanitarian Law Centre, HLC, we identify victims of human rights violations and secure relevant evidence. We are also providing legal support and representing the victims of war crimes and serious human rights violations in civil proceedings for reparation.

Providing legal counselling and education for journalists – in cooperation with Local Press Association

To help hard pressed local media in Serbia, we cooperate with Local Press Association. We conduct educations for journalists and editors, we offer legal protection to independent media, and promote ethical and professional standards in journalism.

Combating homophobic attitudes in Serbian society – in cooperation with Queeria

Our view is that support from non-LGBT persons is crucial for promotion of LGBT rights in Serbia. Therefore we encourage links between the LGBT community, the civil society and supportive citizens. Together with Queeria we try to create an environment in which it will be possible to organise a Pride festival in Belgrade.

Strengthening human rights mechanisms – in cooperation with Youth Initiative for Human Rights

Together with Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR) we work to improve the implementation of transitional laws and strengthen important human rights mechanisms in Serbia.  We are training human rights lawyers, the Ombudsman and the Commissioner for Information of public importance.

Lobbying for laws respecting human rights – in cooperation with Centre for Advanced Legal Studies

In cooperation with Centre for Advanced Legal Studies we established the Coalition Against Discrimination to lobby for an inclusive Law against discrimination. In 2009 it was finally adopted by the Serbian government. We now continue lobbying for other laws in the human rights field.

Educating media and duty-holders in LGBT rights – in cooperation with Labris

Together with Labris we struggle to decrease the level of homophobia and ignorance about the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons. Our main activities are lobbying, advocacy, education and networking, but we are also providing legal counseling for LGBT people.

Monitoring human rights with specific focus on closed institutions – in cooperation with Helsinki Committee for Human Rights

Our cooperation with the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia aims to bring to the public eye violations of human and minority rights. The Annual Report on human rights in Serbia presents the most pressing needs, constraints and priorities regarding the human rights situation in Serbia.

Strengthening capacities of minority groups – in cooperation with Regional Centre for Minorities

Together with Regional Centre for Minorities, RCM, we are strengthening the capacities of minority and human rights NGOs, local authorities, the judiciary and members of central and regional authorities that are dealing with different minority groups.

Building an electronic archive of print media – in cooperation with Ebart Media Documentation

Together with Ebart we try to make journalism more professional and modern, and provide conditions for investigative journalism. Ebart Media Documentation is archiving print media in electronic form. They are also performing media analyses and educating journalists and editors in archiving.
