2010-05-12: The future role and survival of the Press Ombudsman
The Swedish Press Ombudsman, Yrsa Stenius, has been criticized and questioned during the last couple of months, among other for recommending the Swedish Press Council to criticize the daily Expressen for an article about Jan Guillou being in contact with KGB in the -60:s and -70:s.
Expressen responded by boycotting the Press Ombudsman, and several editors in chief are now asking for further clarifications. The question of a Media Ombudsman (with responsibility for all kinds of media) has been brought to the surface. At the same time, an investigation regarding the Law on Freedom of the Press is going on, which might lead to restrictions in terms of the right to privacy.
Welcome to a discusion on the role and survival of the Press Ombudsman and the Press Council – in the light of the ongoing conflict. Is this a deep crisis for the whole system?
