2010-02-18: Russia sentenced to pay considerable damages for disappearance in Chechnya

The European Court of Human Rights has ruled against Russia to pay EUR 120,000 in damages to the families of two Chechen men, Zurab Iriskhanov and Abu Aliyev, who were arrested in their homes in Samashki and Grozny in 2002 and have not returned since.

In light of previous case law on disappearances in Chechnya, it is noteworthy that Russia is sentenced to such a high compensation for these human rights violations, Russian Justice Initiative says in its press release.

The relatives of Zurab Iriskhanova have brought his case to the European Court of Human Rights with assistance from Civil Rights Defenders partner Russian Justice Initiative and Abu Aliyev’s family was assisted by the International Protection Center.
