2010-04-21: Execution despite negotiation of a moratorium

In March, two prisoners were executed in Belarus, despite ongoing negotiations with the Council of Europe on the introduction of a moratorium. According to the United Nations Human Rights Committee Belarus is acting in breach of its international obligations, Viasna says in its latest report.

March was also characterized by increased government pressure on journalists. On March 16 the Belarusian police searched offices and homes of several journalists in Minsk. They confiscated technical equipment and one of the journalists was beaten when the police forced their way into the newspaper’s office.
