Strengthening the LGBT movement – in cooperation with the LGBT Network
Although Russia has taken some very important steps in the right direction, discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and xenophobia in general, is widely spread in the Russian society. Not only do a large number of persons experience discrimination on a daily basis. The Russian state and the authorities signal acceptance towards these attitudes thereby giving a green light to neo-Nazi, religious fundamentalism and intolerance.
Civil Rights Defenders cooperates with the Russian LGBT Network to strengthen the LGBT movement. The network consists of LGBT organisations and groups all over Russia. In early 2009 Civil Rights Defenders and the LGBT Network, together with the International Lesbian and Gay Association, ILGA, Europe, started cooperating on capacity improvements of network member organisations and groups as well as advocacy and lobbying work. Our cooperation continues as we have added important components such as legal councelling and aid , as well as organisational development for the network members.
