Seventh Pride festival in Minsk
On October 11, the International Day of Coming Out, Pride was opening in Minsk. “A provocation for those who do not want to recognize the political rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people”, said Siarhei Androsenka, from Minsk Gay Pride.
The Pride festival in Minsk is an important event in the light of the recent attempt to organize pride in Belgrade. Belgrade Pride was banned at the last moment and now the Belarusian authorities must show that they can guarantee the civil and political rights of the participants.
“Pride is a provocation for those who do not want to recognize the political rights of LGBT-people in general and their dignified existence”, said Siarhei Androsenka, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Minsk Gay Pride, on their web site.
The festival will be held October 11-22, with a parade for the rights of LGBT-people and for tolerance on October 22. The program includes cultural features as well as a congress on the human rights project “Gay Belarus”.
Minsk Pride parade is supported by human rights organisations, politicians and cultural figures all over the world. Nevertheless, LGBT-people still cannot be themselves in their own country, despite the decriminalization of homosexuality in Belarus in 1994.Categories: News.
