Combating Prejudices with Radio Debates

Widespread lack of respect for human rights, in particular discrimination against vulnerable groups, remains of great concern in Albania. Civil Rights Defenders believe that the media can play an important role in raising awareness about human rights and mobilising civic engagement. A cooperation with Independent Local Media Association (ILMA), to engage citizens in debates on radio about the most important human rights issues, has therefore been established.

The political deadlock for the last two years has obstructed the process of Albania’s EU integration. The LGBT community and other marginalised groups such as Roma and persons with disabilities experience prejudices and discrimination.

We believe that the media can play an important role in raising the awareness and initiating debates about human rights issues and at the same time mobilize civic engagement. Therefore, we cooperate with Independent Local Media Association (ILMA) to engage citizens in debates on radio about the most important human rights issues.

We are also developing the capacities of local reporters and journalists on how to report on human rights in their local communities. Reports on cases of discrimination are of outmost importance in combating the prejudices towards marginalised groups in society.
