The last couple of months have been rather eventful. Among many things, Civil Rights Defenders has won a lawsuit against the Swedish State, released a new edition of the magazine Time to Act, organised the tenth edition of the regional Moot Court and published a report on freedom of expression in Russia. We have also welcomed more than 160 human rights defenders to our annual conference Defenders’ Days – Empowering Human Rights Defenders at Risk. Read more in our latest newsletter.

We also report about the campaign we have lunched to highlight the anonymous human rights defender and that we on the 10th of December released a report on vulnerable EU citizens’ rights in Sweden. When clashes between police and demonstrators in Ukraine escalated at the beginning of the year, leading to numerous deaths, Civil Rights Defenders sent a delegation to Kiev. We wanted to get first-hand evidence of the crisis, meet with human rights defenders and most important of all to document human rights violations committed against them. Read about this and our new Office in Moldova and how we document and report about police brutality in Bosnia.

Newsletter no 4, October-December 2013

In Burma, the repressive regime is gradually accepting cautious steps towards democratisation. In summer, we organised a study trip to Europe for ten hand-picked human rights activists, most of them lawyers, from Burma. They were able to connect with colleagues in Serbia who shared with them working methods that have worked well in their democratisation process. In this newsletter you can also read about the trainings in digital security that we organise in East Africa.
