A voice that differs from the mainstream

The radio show Pescanik (the Hourglass) is one of very few independent voices in the public domain in Serbia. Civil Rights Defenders collaboration with Pescanik aims to increase the public’s access to diverse and balanced information and to offer a platform for news and analysis that differs from the mainstream.

The show often addresses difficult issues such as dealing with the past, hate speech, hate crimes and corruption. Topics that are considered highly controversial by parts of the Serbian society and that have resulted in a number of threats being directed towards the two journalists leading the show.

Pescanik also provides a web portal, video production and book edition.

We started our collaboration with Pescanik in 2005 to increase the public’s access to diverse and balanced information and to offer a platform for news and analysis that differs from the mainstream. Moreover, our aim is to contribute to an increased respect for human rights and democracy by informing and educating the population on the most important developments in the sphere of politics, economy and judiciary.

Opinion polls confirm that Pescanik is a trustworthy source of information and a strong opinion maker. In 2010 Pescanik had 475.000 listeners weekly and an average of 7.000 individual visits on the web site per week.
