LGBT issues in Russia in focus during Stockholm Pride

“This time they have decided that LGBT people are enemies of the state”, says Dmitry Musolin on TV4 News.

Stockholm Pride 2013 has been completed; five days of feasting and joy mixed with an intense debate about LGBT people’s rights and status in Sweden and around the world. The negative trends in Russia were in focus and Civil Rights Defenders’ partners were overwhelmed by the support.

The situation in Russia was lifted more than any other during Pride 2013. Videos where Russian right-wing extremists torture young homosexual men spread through social media and shocked many. The Russian authorities recently adopted a federal law that prohibits “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relationships.”

Swedish politicians, opinion-makers and artists agreed in the condemnation of the negative trends, and Russian authorities ‘apparent unwillingness to protect their citizens’ basic human rights.

Civil Rights Defenders’ main activity during Pride was an exchange between a group of Russian parents and the Swedish network Proud parents.

The visit from Russia was covered by Swedish Radio, P4 Extra and TV4 Evening News. The seminar at Pride House on Friday was very well attended and the applause afterwards never wanted to end. During Saturday’s parade the Russian parents walked together with the network Proud parents.

“The mothers are overwhelmed with positive impressions”, Dmitry Musolin writes afterwards in a letter.
