First Lawyers for Lawyers Forum

Civil Rights Defenders is organising a unique forum to enhance capacities of human rights lawyers and encourage them to exchange lessons learnt. Around 50 participants, mainly lawyers, staff and volunteers from human rights organisations, are gathered in Durres, Albania, to attend the first Lawyers for Lawyers Forum 14-16 March.

Lawyers in the Western Balkans region struggle to increase access to justice for victims of human rights violations and to ensure access to justice in general. During the forum, participants from Albania will share their experience on litigating for cases such as the right to fair trial, defending women victims of domestic violence in court, litigating at the Constitutional Court of Albania for removal of court fees, and representing Roma rights and other disadvantaged groups. It is also an opportunity to exchange lessons learnt and meet key experts on cases of strategic litigation in human rights areas such as non-discrimination; Roma rights, freedom of information and hate speech.

Lawyers for Lawyers Forum is attended by participants from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, Macedonia and Serbia. Civil Rights Defender’s aim with the forum is to create an annual event for human rights lawyers that will grow in the years to come.
