Increased access to justice for Roma

Violations committed against Roma people in Moldova are seldom properly investigated nor are the persons responsible prosecuted. Together with the Roma National Center, Civil Rights Defenders provides free legal assistance, identifies and document victims of human rights infringements, monitor trials with the aim to contribute to reducing discrimination against Roma and to increase their access to justice.

The number of Roma persons in Moldova ranges from 20 000 to 250 000 depending on who you ask. Hence, it is difficult to get a good estimation of the actual needs. Roma suffer from discrimination within the judicial system. Violations committed against them are seldom properly investigated nor are the persons responsible prosecuted. Another factor that limits Roma person’s access to justice is that they generally do not know their rights and lack confidence and trust to pursue cases.

We provide free legal assistance, identify and document victims of human rights infringements, monitor trials and provide strategic litigation in significant cases, with the aim to contribute to reducing discrimination against Roma and to increase their access to justice. Our partner in this initiative is the Roma National Center.

Another part of our cooperation consists of spreading information to Roma people about their rights, and how to access their rights. This is done through information campaigns in 10 Roma communities. We also conduct lobbying activities for the rights of Roma and for the adoption of an anti-discrimination law.
