Mediation between citizens and the media

Weak professional standards in journalism, lack of access to justice and increased pressure on media are the core issues for our work in regard to freedom of expression in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Civil Rights Defenders cooperation with the Press Council aims at empowering people to claim their rights and to improve ethical standards in journalism.

People turn to the Press Council to report unprofessional media coverage, or seek protection when their rights have been violated by the media. Through our cooperation with the Press Council we mediate between citizens and print media. We also promote professional standards within the media sector, protect the public from unethical reporting, and the media from political pressure.

We work to increase people’s awareness about non-judicial mechanisms to claim their rights. The long-term goal is that both media and civil society will accept self-regulation as a democratic way of keeping and raising professional standards.
