Bangladesh: Release human rights defender Adilur Rahman Khan

Adilur Rahman Khan

A coalition of local, regional and international human rights organisations, including Civil Rights Defenders, has in an open letter to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina Wazed, called for the immediate release of human rights defender Adilur Rahman Khan. Khan was arrested on August 10 as a result of his human rights work.

Khan is one of Bangladesh’s most prominent and influential human rights defenders and the general secretary of the organisation Odhikar. He also has a leading role in organisations such as the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT), the Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA) and the Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL).

The letter also urges the government to respect freedom of speech and that the indictment against Khan be closed down and that the harassment of members of Odhikar and other human rights defenders ceases.
