Persecution of Viasna continues
On November 29 Ales Bialiatski, Chair of Viasna, appealed the verdict of the Pershamaiski District Court in Minsk, sentencing him to four and a half years in prison and confiscation of property for tax evasion. Civil Rights Defenders believes that the decision is a pretext for the regime to silence human rights defenders, directly connected to Viasna’s work for human rights in Belarus.
The persecution of dissidents continues through two lawsuits against Viasna’s Vice President, Valiantsin Stefanovich. The trial of Valiantsin Stefanovich, which started on 2 December in Partyzanski in Minsk, concerns tax issues. At the same time Stefanovich’s appeal of fines imposed on him at a previous trial is being processed.Categories: News.
