Press conference on the case of Isaak
Percy Bratt, Chair of Civil Rights Defenders, will today announce on a press conference that yet another Habeas Corpus in the case of Dawit Isaak has been submitted to the High Court of Eritrea.
The Swedish-Eritrean journalist Dawit Isaak has been imprisoned for over ten years in Eritrea, without being accused of any crime, or without anyone knowing his location.
The act of Habeas Corpus means in this case that Dawit Isaak must be presented before a court without delay.
A first copy if the writ was sent to the court already this summer but the court refused to recognise that it had received it. This time the EU mission in the capital Asmara handed over the writ. The mission confirms the handing over.
Both the European Union and the government of Sweden support the writ, as well as several leading European newspapers.
– It is an important step forward that both the EU and Sweden this time support our initiative, says Percy Bratt.
Eritrea is obliged to, according to Eritrean as well as international legislation, follow the Habeas Corpus procedure.
