Queer culture festival mobilizes community

In Russia, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are being discriminated in daily life and in law. Together with the Russian organisation Coming Out, Civil Rights Defenders organises an annual Queer Culture Festival in St. Petersburg.

With the festival – to this day the biggest LGBT event in Russia – we want to increasing the awareness about questions of sexual orientation and gender identity. It is also a moment to mobilize and empower the LGBT community. This helps the Russian authorities indirectly to fulfill their duty to protect citizens from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Coming out was founded in 2008 and is a member of the Russian LGBT Network and ILGA-Europe. Civil Rights Defenders started cooperating with the organisation in 2009 and most recently supported the Queer Culture Festival 2011.
