Civil Rights Defenders raises concerns over homophobic attacks in Moldova
On 20 September the GENDERDOC-M information centre was attacked by the extremist group “Occupy Pedophilia”. Civil Rights Defenders expresses its deep concern over the continued persecution and hate speech directed towards the LGBT community in Moldova.
Approximately 40 members of local LGBT community had gathered at the office of GENDERDOC-M prior to departing for a trip that morning. A group of eight masked assailants approached the premises and began throwing eggs over the fence which hit several people, the courtyard floor and the walls of the building. One of the attackers shouted homophobic slogans at the community members.
“Civil Rights Defenders supports our partner GENDERDOC-M’s awareness-raising activities and informational outreach to educate LGBT persons about their rights. However, the government must do more to ensure the safety of all its citizens and protect their rights to private life and freedom from discrimination,” says Bobbie Traut, Programme Manager for Moldova at Civil Rights Defenders.
Civil Rights Defenders adds its voice to GENDERDOC-M’s calling for more decisive and concrete actions to prevent such incidents from occurring. Together, we strongly urge the Prosecutor General’s Office, Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Information and Security Service of Moldova to speak out against such acts and to outrightly condemn hate speech. Steps must be taken to hold those responsible accountable for their actions, thereby demonstrating the country’s commitment to observing international human rights standards.
