Allow Keymir Berdiyev return to Sweden

Civil Rights Defenders and Human Rights Watch call on Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt to investigate the deportation of Keymir Berdiyev to Turkmenistan on 20 May 2011. In a joint letter the organizations urge Sweden to allow him return for his asylum application to be reconsidered.

Mr. Berdiyev sought asylum in Sweden in December 2009 and, despite several appeals, he was denied residence because he had no grounds to fear persecution in Turkmenistan. The Swedish authorities’ made this decision contrary to UN reports of widespread torture and almost total impunity for perpetrators in Turkmenistan.
