Investigate the beating of human rights lawyer Magomedova

Civil Rights Defenders has sent a letter to the Russian Prosecutor General to urge him call for a thorough and impartial investigation into the beating of Dagestani human rights lawyer Sapiyat Magomedova.

“Ms. Magomedova’s case is just one of many attacks against human rights defenders in Russia, aiming to pressure them into discontinuing their human rights work. We are seriously concerned about the ongoing impunity for this case.”, said Ninke Liebert, Programme Officer at Civil Rights Defenders.

In June 2010, two members of the Khasavyurt Police Department beat the Dagestani human rights lawyer unconscious. A month later, a criminal case was opened against the police officers based on ”abuse of power”. However, the day after Ms. Magomedova herself was charged with assault of the police officers. Mid-March 2012, Ms. Magomedova learned that the prosecutor had closed the criminal investigations against both her and the officers because of conflicting evidence in the case.
