Struggle against impunity in the North Caucasus
In collaboration with Memorial Human Rights Center, Civil Rights Defenders monitor human rights violations and provide legal aid to victims and their family members in order to end impunity and strengthen the rule of law in the North Caucasus.
Extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, torture and intimidation have been and continue to be committed by Russian federal forces, as well as by local law enforcement in the North Caucasus republics. Memorial is one of the most experienced Russian human rights organisations working in this region.
We use the information on human rights violations that is being gathered for advocacy work. We strive to raise awareness about the abuses that take place in this region, and to put pressure on Swedish and European decision makers to react on this in their contacts with Russian authorities.
In November 2011 we organise the third conference on North Caucasus, which gathers a large group of human rights defenders from the region and from the international community. We meet to discuss how we can work jointly to improve the human rights development in the region, but also the security situation for the individual human rights defenders working in this region.
