We are seeking interns for the spring of 2015

We offer internships to students and those who have recently completed their studies at university or college. The internship is unpaid and full-time and before the internship starts, the intern is responsible to sort out his/her personal funding for the entire internship period. Primarily we offer internships to students of human rights, law, political science, international relations, journalism, communications or similar. We expect that you share our values, have a genuine interest in human rights and a fundamental knowledge about our work. Our departments plan, coordinate and implement Civil Rights Defenders work in our regions, which also includes advocacy and lobbying in Sweden. As an intern at Civil Rights Defenders you will become a part of our team and primarily assist the Program Director and current department in their mission.


Intern to the East and Horn of Africa Programme

The internship consists of: Assisting the Programme Director in his daily work. The tasks are varied and include writing articles, conducting research and monitoring of regional developments, drafting reports, some administrative work and assisting with the preparation of various activities and events in Sweden and abroad. In the context of our capacity building conference for human rights defenders, the intern will be involved in planning, logistics and communicating with participants. Interns at Civil Rights Defenders will be involved in internal workshops on topics within our field, and are encouraged to take part in external events, such as seminars and meetings.

Requirements:


  • Eligible are applicants whose university studies include an internship period, or applicants who graduated from university in the past year.
  • A genuine interest in human rights and a basic knowledge of Civil Rights Defenders’ work.
  • Good knowledge of the East and Horn of Africa and the human rights landscape in the region.
  • Preferred degree in law, political science, journalism, human rights or equivalent.
  • Excellent knowledge of English. Basic Swedish is a requirement; fluency is a strong advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently and responsibly.
  • Good drafting skills and experience in writing reports, articles and doing research.
  • Experience of event planning is an asset.

Intern to the Eastern Europe and Central Asia Department

The internship consists of: Assisting the Programme Officers and the Programme Director in their daily work. The tasks are varied and include, among other things, writing articles, administrative work and assisting with the preparation of various activities and events in Sweden and abroad. During spring we will arrange Defenders’ Days, a large international conference in Stockholm and the intern will be involved in the logistics and planning around this project and also help with communication to participants. Some translation work will also be needed. During the internship Civil Rights Defenders will endeavour to offer different opportunities to their interns to take part in external events, such as seminars and meetings and also arrange internal workshops on relevant topics within our field.

Requirements:


  • Have a genuine interest in human rights and a basic knowledge of Civil Rights Defenders work.
  • Good knowledge of Eastern Europe and Central Asia and the human rights landscape in these regions.
  • Enrolled at a university in Sweden or abroad within the last year of a Bachelor degree or at Masters level. Also eligible are applicants who are recent graduates (within 1 year from graduation).
  • Preferred degree in law, politics, journalism, human rights or equivalent.
  • Excellent knowledge of English and Russian. Basic Swedish is a requirement but fluency is a strong advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently and responsibly.
  • Experience of event planning is an asset.
  • Experienced in writing articles, reports and doing research.

Intern to the Latin America Department

Intern to the Finance Department

The internship consists of: Assisting the Finance Department in their daily work. The tasks are varied and include, among other things, accounting of card transactions, reimbursements, account payables, daily accounting, archiving, filing. During the internship Civil Rights Defenders will endeavour to offer different opportunities to their interns to take part in external events, such as seminars and meetings and also arrange internal workshops on relevant topics within our field.

Requirements:

  • Have a genuine interest in human rights and a basic knowledge of Civil Rights Defenders work.
  • Enrolled at a university in Sweden or abroad within the last year of a Bachelor degree or at Masters level. Also eligible are applicants who are recent graduates (within 1 year from graduation).
  • Degree in finance.
  • Excellent knowledge of Swedish. Basic English is a requirement but fluency is a strong advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently and responsibly.

Intern to the Communications Department

The Communications Department is responsible for the external positioning of Civil Rights Defenders and acts as an internal advisor on various strategic communication issues. The department publish news stories and reports on developments and achievements in the regions where the organisation is active. With the responsibility for Civil Rights Defenders website, media relations and presence in social media the department’s aim and mission is to increase the awareness about Civil Rights Defenders in Sweden and globally. In the spring of 2015, we are seeking an intern to the Communications department with a passion for human rights alongside a general experience in writing. The intern will be part of the department’s team and will work under the guidance of the Communications Director.

Duties: As an intern you will be involved in implementing the communication department’s mission. You will write articles, do research and translation work and serve as a general support to the communications team. Since the organisation’s communication is bilingual, English and Swedish, we are seeking a person who can speak and write fluently in both languages.

Requirements: The intern should have a genuine interest in human rights and a basic knowledge of Civil Rights Defenders work and mission. The intern should have excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently and responsibly. A background in journalism and communications work is an advantage as well as a proven experience in human rights work for other non-profit organisations or projects in Sweden or abroad.

Intern to the annual conference Defenders’ Days – Empowering Human Rights Defenders at Risk

Defenders’ Days – Empowering Human Rights Defenders at Risk is a capacity building conference with and for human rights defenders and their closest allies, arranged annually in Stockholm in April since 2013. The participants in the event take part of an extensive capacity building programme with interactive and practical oriented trainings and workshops as well as joint sessions with a mix of presentations on security measures, advocacy, communication as well as innovative, inspirational and forward-looking topics with leading experts in their respective field. In the spring of 2015, we are seeking an intern to join the team working with Defenders’ Days with a passion for human rights alongside and general experience in writing. The intern will work under the guidance of the Project Manager.

Requirements:


  • A genuine interest in human rights and a basic knowledge of Civil Rights Defenders’ work.
  • Enrolled at a university in Sweden or abroad within the last year of a Bachelor degree or at Masters level. Also eligible are applicants who are recent graduates (within 1 year from graduation).
