Civil Rights Defenders and Östgruppen invites you to a seminar on the human rights situation in Dagestan. Russia’s semi-autonomous republic of Dagestan tops many lists. It is the most southern and multi-ethnic region of Russia. It is also arguably the most corrupt and violent region of Russia.

Dagestan has also one of the poorest human rights records in Russia with practices ranging from extrajudicial killings and torture to female genital mutilation. Human rights defenders are alarmed that the situation is deteriorating at a rapid rate: during the past half year 16 men are reported to have been kidnapped by state agents in the republic which has a population of three million.

Tens of thousands of followers of non-traditional Islam have been forcefully added to so-called preventive lists because they are suspected of collaborating or participating in extremist and terrorist groups. Usually it means regular searches of their homes, restrictions in their movements, forceful DNA tests and so on.

Speaker, Zakir Magomedov, a Dagestani journalist and human rights defender, will talk about the latest human rights developments in the region and the situation of local human rights defenders.
