Starting on the 5th of November, the documentary play Seven will be on a tour in the Western Balkans, visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Albania. Seven is a documentary play about gender based violence based on interviews with seven activists from around the world. The tour is supported by the Swedish Institute and coordinated by Civil Rights Defenders in cooperation with local partners in each country.

Photo: Seven on tour“This play is a testimony on the conditions of women’s rights worldwide and an insight into the minds of women who dedicate their lives to achieving gender equality. Seven opens a dialogue between the audience and the ensemble on extremely important issues, while men and women who read these texts are not mere members of the ensemble. Each of them brings something new into the play, making it even more authentic for the audience” said Sumeja Tulic, Programme Officer for Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia at Civil Rights Defenders.

The play is always performed by a unique ensemble consisting of influential men and women from each country: politicians, journalists and activists. The script was adapted for theatre by Hedda Krausz Sjögren, award-winning Swedish playwright, actress and producer. Since 2008 when it was first presented, Seven has been seen by more than 20.000 people in 19 countries, while the text was read by over 500 public figures including multiple Oscar winner Meryl Streep, former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, several Ministers and members of the European Parliament. The play is supported by Swedish Institute and facilitated by Civil Rights Defenders in cooperation with local partners in each country. Each play will be followed by additional activities, aimed to raise awareness on issues of gender based violence and breaches of respect for women’s rights.

Seven is based on interviews with Marina Pisklakova – Parker (Russia), Mukhtar Mai (Pakistan), Hafsat Abiola (Nigeria), Inez McCormack (Northern Ireland), Ferida Azizi (Afghanistan), Annabella de Leon (Guatemala) and Mu Sochua (Cambodia) taken by seven award-winning playwrights: Paula Cizmar, Catherine Filloux, Gail Kriegel, Carol K. Mack, Ruth Margraff, Anna Deveare-Smith and Susan Yankowitz.
