(English) Panel Discussion on Anti-Terrorism Laws in Africa
On the 12th of March, Civil Rights Defenders will co-sponsor a parallel session at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva. The event will focus on the use and abuse of anti-terrorism laws in Africa which is undermining civil society, eroding human rights and leading to a situation where numerous dissidents have been imprisoned.
As Civil Rights Defenders expands its programme to include the East & Horn of Africa terrorist threats from Al-Shabab pose genuine threats to national security, human rights, regional stability, and the civilian populations across the region.
The other co-sponsors will include Civicus and the East & Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project (EHAHRDP).
This event will discuss and analyse these trends across the African continent and will include our Programme Director for the East & Horn of Africa, Mesfin Negash on the discussion panel. The broad reach of anti-terror legislation and its chilling impact on other rights and freedoms will also be one of the main threads going through this discussion.
