(English) UN Report Highlights Gross Human Rights Violations in Eritrea
On June 08th The UN Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in Eritrea issued a damning report and subsequent statement finding the Government of Eritrea “responsible for systematic, widespread and gross human rights violations that have created a climate of fear in which dissent is stifled, a large proportion of the population is subjected to forced labour and imprisonment, and hundreds of thousands of refugees have fled the country”
“The report is a stark reminder of the importance for Civil Rights Defenders to support and empower Eritrean human rights defenders both at home and abroad” says Mesfin Negash Programme Director for the East and Horn of Africa Programme at Civil Rights Defenders.
Some of these gross violations according to the report may amount to crimes against humanity.
“The report released today paints a dismal picture regarding the state of human rights in Eritrea today. Over 5,000 people per month attempt to leave the country out of sheer desperation many making the perilous journey across the Mediterranean” added Mesfin Negash.
