(English) Response Received from Authorities Regarding the Release of Belarusian Activist Pavel Levinov

(English) In a letter issued to the Oktyabrsky District Court of Vitebsk city in Belarus Civil Rights Defenders calls for the immediate release of Pavel Levinov and for all administrative charges to be dropped against him. He was arrested and detained in his capacity as observer while monitoring the peaceful protests of March 26 for the Belarusian- Helsinki Committee.

NY RAPPORT: För ett år sedan beslutade EU att permanent lyfta sina sanktioner mot Vitryssland. Sanktionerna infördes på grund av regimens människorättskränkningar, men hävdes – trots bristen på framsteg. Nu släpper Civil Rights Defenders en ny rapport som slår fast att det inte skett någon ytterligare utveckling gällande landets medborgerliga och politiska rättigheter.

Tre personer avrättade i Vitryssland

Alexander Lukasjenkas auktoritära regim har avrättat tre personer, enligt den vitryska människorättsorganisationen Viasna. Henadz Yakavitski, Ivan Kulesh och Siarhei Khmialeuski sköts till döds i huvudstaden Minsk den 5 november. Vitryssland har hittills avrättat fyra personer 2016. Detta efter att EU tidigare i februari beslutade att permanent lyfta de tidigare sanktionerna mot 170 personer, inklusive president Lukasjenka.

(English) Stockholm Pride – A Time to Show Solidarity and Support

(English) This week, thousands of people gather in the capital of Sweden to take a positive stance against discrimination toward LGBT people, and to celebrate dignity, equality, diversity and human rights. While the concept of Pride is widely recognised in many parts of the world, the acceptance is not. In order to draw attention to the environment our friends and colleagues are forced to work in, Civil Rights Defenders is glad to welcome LGBT activists from Belarus, Russia and the Western Balkans to this year’s Stockholm Pride.

Den 11 oktober var det presidentval i Vitryssland och som förutspått var det Aleksandr Lukasjenko, som styrt landet de senaste 20 åren, som vann. Civil Rights Defenders är en av flera människorättsorganisationer som kritiserat valet eftersom det inte genomförts fritt och demokratiskt. I en intervju med Sveriges Radio kommenterar vår programchef för Österuropa och Centralasien den rådande situationen.

(English) On the 11th of October President Lukashenka will run for a 5th term in office. Civil Rights Defenders spoke to several Belarusian human rights defenders to hear what they have to say about the election. One of them says that ”the presidential election in Belarus does not differ much from the previous ones”. The majority of the human rights defenders have chosen to remain anonymous due to fear of reprisals.

(English) International Day of Solidarity with Civil Society in Belarus – August 04th

(English) August 04th is celebrated as the International Day of Solidarity with Civil Society in Belarus. It is all the more important as the human rights landscape in Belarus has not improved, having been overshadowed by events in Russia and Ukraine. This was underpinned by Miklós Haraszti, the UN Special Rapporteur on Belarus in his report to the Human Rights Council at the end of June where he noted no real improvements in the human rights situation in the country.

Utan legitima anledningar har flera journalister under den senaste tiden tillfälligt gripits av polis i Vitryssland. Civil Rights Defenders och det vitryska journalistförbundet BAJ kräver nu att trakasserierna omedelbart upphör. – Vi kräver att de vitryska myndigheterna uppfyller sina internationella åtaganden och respekterar yttrandefriheten, säger Joanna Kurosz, programansvarig för Östeuropa och Centralasien på Civil Rights Defenders.
