Has Serbia capitulated to the perpetrators and hooligans?
The Pride Parade that would have been held in Belgrade, September 20, was stopped in the last minute. The Interior Ministry and the police suddenly announced that if the parade would be held in central Belgrade the participants’ safety could not be guaranteed.
This means in fact that the parade was banned, and shows that Serbian authorities are unable – or unwilling – to protect the right of peaceful assembly and expression for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Serbia.
Goran Miletic, Civil Rights Defenders human rights lawyer based in Belgrade, talks about the decisions that brought a strong storm of protests in civil society – but also among people who usually do not identify or sympathize with LGBT people.
