Live: Silence over Eurovisionland
As the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 is disappearing from people’s minds, the Azeri government has put all its efforts on controlling freedom of expression, assembly and association in the country. The regime persecutes journalists and charge them in fabricated processes. Five cyber dissidents are currently in detention, or prison, and the Azeri government has passed amendments to the country’s freedom of information law, that restricts investigative journalism.
In early November Azerbaijan increased the punishment for those organising and participating in ‘unauthorised’ or ‘banned’ protests. The recent amendments to the country´s Criminal Code now provide for longer prison sentences and heftier fines: up to two years in prison for anyone involved in a ‘legally banned’ assembly (Article 169). Fines have also been increased from between 100 to 500 Azerbaijani Manats (AZN) ($127-637 USD) previously, to between 5,000 and 8,000 AZN ($6,370-10,192 USD).
Rasul Jafarov is Chairman of the Human Rights Club and Campaign Coordinator for Sing for Democracy, an advocacy campaign that was originally set up by a group of Azeri human rights organisations in the run up to the Eurovision Song Contest. Jafarov will speak about the state of freedom of expression and assembly, the situation for political prisoners, and other human rights issues concerning Azerbaijan.
