NOTE! Seminar cancelled! Putin’s return and the North Caucasus

Varvara Pakhomenko

CANCELLED! Due to illness we have to cancel this seminar. We apologise for the inconvience this may cause you!

Vladimir Putin became president in Russia after the second war in Chechnya in 1999. On March 4, Russia goes to the polls in an election that probably will bring Putin back to power. In Moscow, many voters are unsatisfied with the investments in the North Caucasus and have demonstrated under the slogan “stop feeding the North Caucasus.” Which implications will the election and Putin’s return have for the people of Chechnya and the neighboring republics in the conflict-torn region?

Varvara Pakhomenko, International Crisis Group, talks about the situation in Russia and the North Caucasus before the upcoming presidential election.

The discussion will be moderated by Joanna Kurosz, Programme Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

Date: 22 February
Time: 9.00-10.00 (Coffee/tea and sandwiches are served from 08.30)
Location: Stora Nygatan 26, Stockholm.

The seminar will be in English. Register at anmalan@civilrightsdefenders.org

PS. Don’t miss our next event on March 9, when Benedicte Berner, Media analyst and Vice president of the board at Civil Rights Defenders, talks about the media climate in Russia after the presidential election. More information will be published soon.
